LAWRENCE – Following the recent death of the beloved deer, “Annie”, who resided in the Lawrence community, Village of Lawrence Police Chief Paul Bianco issued the following statement, “The Village of Lawrence and the Lawrence Police Department are saddened by the incident involving “Annie” the deer and a Police Conservation Officer from the Pokagon Band of Tribal Police. The incident occurred in Lawrence Township, outside of the Village of Lawrence limits, and the Lawrence Police Department was not asked to assist.
“Annie” was often seen in the Village visiting residents and photographed with many, including one of the Lawrence Police Officers during one of her visits to the school. As “Annie” was a wild animal with domesticated tendencies, our police department did their best to protect both our citizens and “Annie” during her visits to the Village of Lawrence.
The statement concluded, “We understand that emotions are very strong regarding this situation. We ask that you keep in mind that the incident was not within the jurisdiction of the Village of Lawrence. If you have further questions, we ask that you direct them to the Pokagon Tribal Police.”
