A free summer solstice social at the foot of Saugatuck’s highest point awaits goers Wednesday, June 21, at the Saugatuck- Douglas History Center’s Pump House Museum at Mt. Baldhead’s foot.
From 6 to 8 p.m. as west light lowers behind the dune casting Kalamazoo River shadows, guest can partake of beer, wine and snacks on the patio and/or partake of the 735 Park St. museum show.
“The Lure of Mt. Baldhead” debuted in post-Covid summer 2022 offering an indoor viewing platform with 360° view of photographer James Cook’s panoramic dune top image, plus more immersive gear hauled down the dune’s 302 steps from its radar dome.
Or, if you’re up for it, walk the steps to see where the decommissioned Cold War-era project — not to mention sweeping view — now lies.
The museum, housed in a 1904 pumphouse that furnished water to the growing city, is marking its 28th year of exhibits and programming. “Lure” last summer drew more than 1,000 visitors.
The site also features a riverside garden, terrace and gift shop offerings SDHC publications, maps, t-shirts, postcards and souvenirs.
The free attraction is fortified by volunteers drawn to its setting, ongoing learning and chance to meet curious and interesting guests.
