MARION – Last week, seventh grade classes at an Osceola County school were able to experience some forensics and law enforcement exposure from the sheriff’s department.
“This was to help bridge the lessons learned in school with the practical side of forensics,” a sheriff department spokesperson said. “Today SRO’s Douglas, Dougherty and Helmer joined with Undersheriff Avery with K9 Ryker and Sgt. Allen of the Michigan State Police – Fire Investigation Unit brought their expertise and knowledge to show the kids what different aspects of law enforcement there are.
“The kids were exposed to the use of a K9 and it’s history in the department. They were able to ask questions and watch K9 Ryker work. SRO’s provided some hands on experience with finger printing items and themselves. They discussed the ways finger prints are used and just how unique they are to each person.”
Sgt Allen spoke to the student about fire investigation and what it takes to investigate fires.
“Students learned their math lessons come in very handy to go into this specialty,” the sheriff department spokesperson said. “We wish to thank Ms. Hill and all the seventh grade teachers for participating in this fun filled afternoon.”
