HOLLAND—The SAC volleyball match between visiting Saugatuck and Black River on Thursday, Sept. 22, was a true back-and-forth affair.
In the end, it was the Trailblazers who claimed the 25-12, 21-25, 25-17, 22-25, 15-13 victory.
“We jumped out to a quick start in the first game, but it was a battle after that,” Saugatuck coach Sherri Austin said. “With scrappy play and relentless pursuit on defense, we were able to prevail.”
Kennedy Gustafson led the Trailblazers with 12 kills, while Alyssa Ries had 11. Haley Rivera and Jenn Schock each had 15 assists, with Schock adding 19 digs and Rivera going for 15 digs.
Erin Moerler chipped in with nine kills.
Two days earlier, Saugatuck competed in a SAC double dual and came away with a split decision.
The Trailblazers beat Fennville 25-19, 18-25, 15-13, but dropped a 22-25, 25-23, 17-15 decision to Allegan.
“It was a hot night in the gym and the kids played with a lot of intensity and teamwork,” Austin said.
Gustafson and Ries led Saugatuck in kills with 17 and 11, respectively. Rivera had 20 assists and 14 digs, while Schock had 19 assists and 24 digs.
