Pat’s Bits and Pieces: Whew, It’s Over

While I love holidays and especially Christmas (after all we are loaded with grandkids), I can’t say I’m completely sorry that the holiday is now officially over once more.
It’s been a tough year for the whole world actually with the horror of war in the holy land (on civilians and children no less) on the news every day with no end in sight. There hasn’t been much “Peace on Earth” lately, despite world-wide prayers for it. We can keep hoping – and praying for a resolution to this terrible conflict and for more love for each other no matter the religion and ethnic heritage. After all we are all human, and under the skin, all the same color.
Here in our little corner, it was a “kinda” spread out holiday this year, with presents opened at various times beginning with the first week of December and holiday dinners on Christmas Eve at daughter Lisa’s (and Terry’s of course) and on Christmas Day here at home with son Don, who is living as a temporary bachelor while his wife Micki helps her Mom in Texas, while she is recovering from a broken hip.
Murphy’s Law has been much in evidence this year too with packages not arriving, or arriving with something missing, but now all of that is over and resolved and the celebrations are “nearly over.”
I say nearly because that branch of the Maurers (Don’s clan) will hold their Christmas Celebration on New Year’s weekend to finish up 2023, when Micki finally gets home again this week. We sure miss her.

  1. It will be a year to remember for sure
All in all, it really has been a strange year, filled with both bad happenings (and good) for the Maurer clan with my long residence in three hospitals over seven weeks this summer and my amazing recovery from a heart attack, massive anaphylactic shock and other assorted personal catastrophes in July.
Add to that three sinus infections, two bouts of pneumonia and recurring, almost constant allergies which are probably caused by an auto-immune disorder (we will find out more about that after a series of tests hopefully).
The good news is I am still here and getting steadily better with rehab…so it was a good holiday for these old folks who still have each other (Jack says that’s the best Christmas gift ever), and we are not taking it for granted. We appreciate our many blessings very much.
Now we are getting ready for the beginning of what we are hoping will be a much better year for all of us with less illness and less family drama (I wish everyone could always be friends) and more good times to add to our memory “banks.”
That being said, 2023 is officially over this weekend. I hope all of you had a wonderful Christmas and are all set for a “Happy New Year!”
New Year’s Eve is Sunday night. We will be celebrating in the usual way – watching a movie and going to bed early as usual. We are way beyond partying and/or staying up to watch the “ball” drop and usher in a new year. We’ve done that too many times and it doesn’t hold any attraction anymore…
We used to have a little party with the granddaughters, but even they are way beyond that nowadays. They will be doing what we used to do – partying and welcoming in another year.
It seems like they roll around pretty fast these days.
This is usually the week to make a few “Resolutions,” and since I make – and break nearly the same ones every year, I will just “resolve” to try a little harder to 1. Eat healthier; 2. Exercise (walk) more; 3. Spend more time with friends; 4Set aside time every day for me – to read, or sew, or watch a movie. And 5. Do a little drawing and painting.
I will probably keep three out of five of those, I’m just not saying which ones it will be…
