Otsego High School hosted its 93rd Annual Honors Night on Sunday, May 21.
Students who had earned a grade point average of at least 3.5 during the first two trimesters of the current school year were invited to attend. This year, 332 students qualified for the recognition, an increase of eight from last year.
Beginning sophomore year, students are also eligible to qualify for an academic award. For that honor, students must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.75.
The academic awards are as follows: the first time a student qualifies, he or she earns a lamp of learning patch; the second time a student qualifies, he or she earns an academic pin; and the third time a student qualifies, he or she earns a plaque.
In addition to honoring the current students who are excelling academically, Honors Night also recognizes a past student with the Outstanding Alumnus Award.
This year’s honor was the late Cyndi Trobeck. Her husband Gary accepted the award on Trobeck’s behalf.
After graduating from OHS in 1977, Trobeck attended Western Michigan University before settling back in the Otsego area, where she remained a pillar of the community until her death last year.
Among Trobeck’s numerous accomplishments was becoming the City of Otsego’s first female mayor in 2016. She began serving on the city council in 2012.
Gary Trobeck concluded his speech with the words she used to send off the children in her Sunday School class: “Go out and do something good this week.”
