Obituary: Mr. Fred Herman Phillips Jr.

Mr. Fred Herman Phillips, Jr., age 72, of Lafayette, Alabama passed away on Sunday, February 12th, 2023 at Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton, Georgia. Fred was born 14 January 1951 in LaFayette, AL to the late Fred and Ethel Bone Phillips.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 18th, 2023 at 12:00 Noon (EST) at the Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley, Alabama. Burial will follow in Sandy Ridge United Methodist Church Cemetery in LaFayette. Pastor Jerry Wheeles and Pastor Tim Whaley will officiate. Fred’s family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6:00 until 9:00 PM (EST) at the Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home in Valley.
In addition to his parents, Fred was predeceased by his brothers, Gary Wayne Phillips in 2005 and Authur Leon Phillips in 2020.
Survivors include Lesia Adams of Roanoke, AL; two sisters, Janice Philpott of Ringgold, GA and Carolyn Shaw of Valley, AL; and one brother, James Phillips (Georgina) of Laural, MD; and many friends, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Also surviving, his lunch date every day, Pam Adams and his and Lesia’s fur baby, P’Nutt “Willie Boy”.
On 3 May 1997, Fred and Lesia Adams were married at Mount Zion Baptist Church, Tiller Crossroads, Chambers County, AL. Even though they were divorced in November 2003, Lesia and Fred were always the Love of each other’s life and over the years Lesia was always there for Fred.
On 25 July 1945 at UAB Medical Center, Birmingham, Jefferson County, AL, Fred was the donor of a kidney to his brother Gary Wayne Phillips.
In June 1999, Lieutenant Fred Phillips retired from the City of Auburn, Lee County, AL Fire Department; he had been a career firefighter for 25 years. As a firefighter, Fred attended Southern Union State Jr. College and Auburn University graduating with a Fire Science degree. Auburn Fire Division increased to four stations during Fred’s 25 years as a firefighter but he served at Station 1, Headquarters his entire career. During Fred’s working years as a career firefighter, he also worked as a bulldozer operator, worked in the pulpwood industry and maintained a number of head of cattle.
