Marjorie “Peggy” Kathleen (Adams) VanTubergen – Age 87 of Lake, Michigan passed away at her home on Wednesday, November 16, 2022. Peggy was born on February 16, 1935 to parents Joseph and Marjorie (Blake) Adams in Jackson, Michigan. After graduating from Michigan Center high school in 1952, Peggy joined the US Marine Corps. She served as secretary to former Colonel, General Lewis Walt, at the base in Quantico. In 1990, she received an inscribed copy of General Walt’s book titled “Strange War, Strange Strategy.” It was signed with his nickname for her, “Irish”. Peggy’s military service and interview is on record at the Library of Congress Veteran’s History Project. Peggy worked several years for the State of Michigan, Department of Corrections, eventually retiring as Secretary for the Warden at the Muskegon Correctional Facility. She was a member of Lake of the Pines Association where she helped organize the many social events, including Veteran’s dinners and luncheons for the bicyclists in the DALMAC Bike Run that stopped to rest at the Association on their way up to Mackinaw City. Peggy also belonged to the Michigan Chapter One Women’s Marine Association, Red Hat Society, the VFW, and the American Legion. Peggy had a deep love for her family and friends and had an infectious smile that lit up the room. She doted on her kitties and the many critters that enjoyed the treats she placed around her beautiful home in the woods. She enjoyed golf and bowling, and played on many leagues throughout the years. Peggy and her husband, George, loved to travel in their RV, spending many winter months in Arizona. They cruised the lake in their pontoon with friends and family and loved going to the casino together. Peggy and George shared great pride in the men and women of the United States military.
Peggy will be greatly missed by her family and friends including her son, Steven (Julie) Garrison, daughters Leslie Garrison and Kathleen Diaz, stepchildren Michael (Brenda) VanTubergen, Steven (Tracy) VanTubergen, and Ellen (Michael) Tanis, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, brothers Joseph (Ida) Adams and Patrick (Michelle) Adams.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George “Doc” VanTubergen, in 2019, and her parents. Family and friends are invited to share their memories and condolences online at www.Campbell-fh.com.
