Obituary: Gladys May Kincaid

Gladys Kincaid, a loving and giving mother, slipped the surly bonds of earth and ascended unto the heavens forever on Tuesday, November 8, 2022, at 9:50 AM at age 91, surrounded by her caring family. She was born in the city of Chicago, IL, on October 27, 1931, to her parents, Mary A. Atkins and James E. Hicks. She graduated from Elmhurst College, IL, with an undergraduate degree then later Western Michigan University, MI, with a Master’s Degree in Library Science. She met and married her husband, Vance Lecester Kincaid, also at Elmhurst on the GI Bill. Together they celebrated 64 years of marriage on May 12, 2015. In 1955, the family of four finally moved from Glen Ellyn, IL, to the family farm – Rolling Acres farm in Gobles, MI, where they lived for 75 years. Gladys and Vance both felt their farmland was a “little piece of heaven.” Gladys was a long-time educator and head librarian at the Fennville Public Schools. She was a life-long learner. In retirement, she lived at the farmhouse raising Belted Galloway beef cattle with her husband and children. Always the helper, she was deeply involved in the Gobles Bethany Presbyterian Church. Being a 4-H and Scout leader, she was always involved in community, school, and civic issues. She believed and lived a life that embodied the ideal that life is a life-long education. She was a gracious, loving, giving, strong, educated woman that touched the lives of everyone she met. Surviving are her four children, Michelle L. Thomas, Allegan, Vance L. Kincaid II, Lansing, Holly M. (David) Thomas, Allegan, and Kreg (Lisa) Kincaid, Bloomingdale; 16 grandchildren, 19 great and 4 great great grandchildren. A graveside service was held at Earl Cemetery for burying Gladys and Vance together on Friday, November 11, 2022 (also Vance’s birthday). A Celebration of Life meal followed at the Bethany Presbyterian Church, Gobles. Contributions in memory of Gladys may be made to the Van Buren District Library, Gobles Branch. Any unspecified donations will be given to the Bethany Presbyterian Church, Gobles. Arrangements by the Gobles Chapel, D. L. Miller Funeral Home, www.dlmillerfuneralhome.com.
