Obituary: Clare L. Guthrie

Clare L. Guthrie, age 90 of Mt. Pleasant, a devoted husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully into the arms of Jesus on Saturday, November 27, 2021 at the McLaren Central Michigan Hospital of Mt. Pleasant with his family by his side. On June 13, 1931, Clare was born one of ten children to Richard and Grace (Dalyrample) Guthrie in Vestaburg, MI; growing up on the family farm in Winn, MI. He was united in marriage to June Wing on July 30, 1955 in their hometown of Vestaburg, and together the pair shared just over 66 wonderful years of marriage. Clare was a proud veteran of the U.S. Armed Services, having honorably served with the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean War and later reenlisting with the National Guard from 1975 to 1994. During his working years, Clare impressively served the Dow Chemical Co. for 38 years as a master elevator technician where he had the nickname “Sage “and simultaneously owned and operated Guthrie Oil Co. from 1971 right up to his last days. Clare loved traveling with his family across the U.S. and Mexico and he had a passion for history. He really enjoyed going to local orchards to pick apples, cherries and peaches. Those that knew Clare well knew of his tireless nature and work ethic, outgoing personality, quick wit and sense of humor, and above all, his huge love for his family.
Clare is survived by his wife June and his five children Debbie (Ray) Tidd of Palm Desert, CA., Mike (Dorene) Guthrie of Riverdale, Linda (Jeff) Acklin of Comstock Park, Tim (Donna) Guthrie of Rosebush, and Sue (Clint) Kern of Clare. Other survivors include his grandchildren Megan, Kymiri, Gabriel, Brandon, Lisa, Jason, Tony, Kelly, Lindsay, Joe, Mike, James, Lilly, John, Molly, Jacob, and Abby, and his five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter Sarah Guthrie and son-in-law Joe D. McGuire.
Graveside services with military honors for Clare took place at the Cherry Grove Cemetery of Clare on Thursday, December 2, 2021 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Herb Bowers officiating.
