Obituary: Betty Jean Bohy

Betty Jean Bohy – age 85, passed away surrounded by her family at her home in Lake, on Monday, March 4th, 2024. She was born to parents Rufus Glenn and Blanch (Cotterman) Powell . Betty grew up on a big farmhouse with seven siblings: Glenn Rufus Powell, Jr. Pearla Powell, Doughety, Howard, and James Jacob Powell, Donald Richard Powell, and Becky Sue Powell. Betty loved to be outdoors. She was raised on a large farm which was directly across from the fire tower on US 10 and Betty as a child she would climb the tower and sit with the fire watcher. Betty and her brother would play tag on the bottom of the tower but were warned not to, to avoid getting hurt. During her school days, Betty would catch a school bus and sometimes convince the bus driver to drop she and her siblings off or pick them up at the Lake Roller Rink. She milked cows by hand. One time she was over the cows in the barn throwing hay and fell through the floor. She landed behind the cows but was not hurt and extremely glad the cow did not kick her. There was a rooster that would chase anyone who was gathering eggs. There were also pigs and sheep to be tended to. Dad would also sell sheep. The farm was on US 10 or Ludington Road. Betty’s parents had a large garden in which they canned the harvests of the garden. Canning helped to feed a large family and was a useful skill that Betty learned at an earlier age and used later in her life. Betty’s husband William harvested a deer was also a welcomed addition the feed the family. After Betty’s husband passed away, she and her own children would walk often to 8 Point Lake to fish. Betty was married to William George Hunt on July 13, 1957, followed by a marriage to George William Bohy on June 15, 1985. She worked as a cashier at a gas station, and enjoyed knitting hats, playing with grands and great- grandkids, using her computer, Kindle, playing Bingo and always going to church services at Bethany Baptist. She is survived by her children Randy Hunt of Wyoming, George Hunt (Penny) of Ohio, Marcia Coppens (Walt), Nadene (Matthew) Clark of New Mexico, Wilma Brumit, of Swartz Creek, and numerous Grandchildren, Great- grandchildren and Great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by both husbands and a daughter Vickie Canterbury. A funeral service is planned for Betty on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at 11 AM at the Christ Community Church (formerly the Bethany Baptist Church) in Lake. Pastor Gene Hockey will officiate. Families and friends may visit at the church from 10:00 until the time of service. Place of Rest will be in North Brinton Cemetery. Please consider memorials to American Cancer Society.
