Obituary: Al “Abe” Gulick

Al “Abe” Gulick, age 89 of Clare passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 5, 2023 at the Horizon Senior Living Home of Clare.  On January 20, 1934, Al was born one of two children to Ford and Gathel (Haas) Gulick in Ithaca, MI.  Al was a lifelong resident of the Central Michigan area, and a graduate of the Midland High School Class of 1952.  On March 3, 1962, Al was united in marriage to Bonnie K. Buzzell in Midland, and together the couple shared sixty-one years of marriage.  Al’s working years were largely served in the role of trucker for a few local companies, but his over twenty-year span as a dedicated powder hauler for Rockcrete Transit Mix filled the lion’s share of his career.  Al also spent time farming in his younger years, which fueled his enjoyment as a hobby farmer in his later years, and he equally enjoyed his thirteen years as a volunteer firefighter with the Clare Fire Dept.  Throughout his life, Al enjoyed deer hunting, building model semis when time allowed, and his yearly trip to Florida with Bonnie.  However, those that knew Al best, knew that Al sought any opportunity to play a euchre game with family, attend a Great Lakes Loons game with the boys, or tease and pick on anybody that he felt needed a good laugh.

Al is survived by his wife Bonnie of Clare, and his five children Terry (Mary Sue) Gulick of Palm City, FL., Mary Lou Mudd of Midland, Sue (Bruce) Wentworth of Clare, Karen (Scott) Burmeister of Clare, and Larry (Deb) Gulick of Howell.  Other survivors include his fifteen grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, his son-in-law Mitch Mudd, his brother-in-law Dave Schlader, and many nieces and nephews.  Al was preceded in death by his parents Ford and Gathel Gulick and his sister Alma J. Schlader.

A funeral service in honor of Al will take place on Monday, August 14, 2023 at 11:00 A.M, at the Clare Chapel of the Stephenson-Wyman Funeral Home with Mr. Larry Gulick officiating.  A graveside service will follow in Midland Memorial Gardens at 3:00 P.M.  Visitation will take place at the funeral home on Sunday the 13th from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. and 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.  Memorial contributions in honor of Al may be directed to either the Clare Fire Department, or MyMichigan Homecare and Hospice.  For those unable to attend services, online condolences may be shared at www.stephenson-wyman.com
