May I Walk with You? THE ANSWER

Many years ago, I asked what I thought was a rather complicated and difficult question of a Catholic priest.  I don’t remember the question, but I remember the answer.  He simply said, “Jesus is the answer.”  It was so simple, yet not simplistic.  So full of wisdom and so profound!

Today, I am confronted with many questions in my personal life and my life as a psychologist.  I am also confronted with many questions about my life as a Christian.  The questions about being Christian are the most easily answered.  God has given us the Bible, compiled about two thousand years ago, from ancient and contemporary writing, and most Christians are educated in the Catechism which flows from the Bible and Church Tradition.

As a psychologist, I am not able to always point people in the direction of Scripture and Sacred Tradition.  I must respect the cultural and spiritual background of my patients.  I would never advise a Non-Christian to live like a Christian and follow the way of Jesus.  I do often ask if I can speak from a Christian perspective and have yet to have anyone refuse.  In fact, most of my patients like hearing the Christian perspective, even if they disagree with it.  I never push my Christianity on others.

In my personal life and family life, I am a Christian.  I try to find the answers to my questions about life by reading the Bible, looking up things in the Catechism, and by conversing with others who are more educated and knowledgeable than myself.  I know that I often get overwhelmed with too much complication and need someone to give it to me simply.  Sometimes the simpler answer is the best!

In our world and culture today, we are confronted daily with questions about how we ought to live and behave.  We question everyone and everything and it is tough to find clear answers to ethical and cultural issues.  We want to know what needs to happen for us to be happy, successful, and loved.  We want to know and have purpose in our lives.  As a Christian, I can advise you to begin with the New Testament and the Catechism.  As a psychologist I can walk with you in your journey as you travel to find satisfying answers.  I can help you find answers to your most complicated questions.  Sometimes all we need is the simple answer.

“May the Lord bless and keep you.  May he let his face shine upon you, be gracious to you and give you his peace.”
