Lansing man facing 13 felonies for shooting at police

Dustin Sweet, 24 of Lansing, is in the Isabella County Jail after a November 13 incident that turned into a police chase that led from Clare into Rosebush at 3:43 pm Monday and ended with the apprehension of a 24-year-old man, identified as Sweet, wielding a handgun and shooting at an officer and his vehicle.
A follow up release from Isabella County Sheriff Michael Main said, “Sweet has a lengthy history with law enforcement including flee and elude [incidents] throughout other agencies downstate.”
Reportedly he has multiple prior convictions.
Main continued, “Clare City PD was responding to a suspicious vehicle stopped in the roadway. When they approached Sweet, he sped off and the pursuit was initiated.”
Isabella County Sheriff’s deputies were called to assist Clare Police, as well as the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Police, Michigan State Police, the Department of Natural Resources, the Isabella County Emergency Services Team, the Clare County Sheriff’s Office, the Bureau of Indian Affairs and Central Michigan University Police.
According to the original release from Sheriff Main, Sweet stopped as the Nissan Maxima he was driving approached the 4000 block of North Mission Road and “fired a round at the police officer and patrol unit.”
The man next fled on foot in an easterly direction and went into Mears, a nearby business that had employees inside. The suspect ran through the building and left it, the Sheriff said. A perimeter was placed around the area and for the next few hours police searched for the suspect with the help of drones, emergency services teams, a Michigan State Police helicopter and investigators.
Meanwhile the Rosebush community was told to “shelter in place.” The community was on lockdown for several hours while police searched the area.
Sweet was reportedly hiding under a residence not far away. He emerged from under a crawl space. A K9 officer was deployed and bit the suspect, Sheriff Main said, and the man was taken into custody without any additional injury. He was “checked out medically at a local emergency room and then transported to the Isabella County Jail,” where he remains lodged on a $1 million bond.
Sweet has been arraigned, Main said. He was charged with:
Count 1 – Police Officer – Fleeing Third Degree;
Count 2 – Weapons Felony Firearm;
Count 3 – Assaults with a dangerous weapon;
Count 4 – Weapons felony firearm;
Count 5 – Weapons carrying concealed; 
Count 6 – Weapons firearms Possession by a felon;
Count 7 – Weapons Felony Firearm;
Count 8 – Weapons firearms receiving and concealing; 
Count 9 – Weapons felony Firearm;
Count 10 – Police Officer Assaulting and Resisting/obstruction; 
Count 11 – Weapons felony firearm;
Count 12 – Home invasion 1st degree; and
Count 13 – Controlled Substance – Possession of Methamphetamine. 
Sweet is facing a preliminary hearing November 30.
