A big night on offense and an impressive defensive effort led to a lopsided home victory for the McBain Northern Michigan Christian girls basketball team Tuesday. The Lady Comets, hosting Houghton Lake, dominated their way to a 67-9 victory.
“The girls played a decent game for not having played in three-and-a-half weeks,” head coach Rich Bennett said. “You could tell we were coming off of break, we started defensively slow and our transition was a little messy. We made a few changes at halftime and the team came out with a much better defensive stance and had some great steals to start the half.”
NMC led 20-2 after the first quarter and had leads of 35-4 and 45-4 after the second and third quarters.
Megan Bennett led the Comets with 22 points, eight rebounds and two steals, Paige Ebels added 18 points, 10 steals, three rebounds, two assists and Alaina Rozeveld had 10 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals.
“Kate Krick played a great game and Ebels really turned a corner after halftime and led the team well in the second half,” Bennett said. “Megan covered the floor well and transitioned very smoothly. Rozeveld has really taken her game up a few notches and you can see the work that she has put in in the off season and always being the last one in the gym. Overall, we played a great game but there is a lot of season to go.”
NMC (3-0 overall, 3-0 Highland) was at Evart on Thursday, hosts Brethren on Monday and heads to Lake City on Wednesday.
