MCBAIN – McBain’s Evan Haverkamp’s junior season for the McBain Ramblers was an excellent one this year.
Haverkamp averaged 18.2 points, 10.4 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game. He led McBain to Highland Conference and district titles.
It was his second season on the varsity.
“I was very impressed with where we came from last year into this year,” Haverkamp said. “It was based on how much some of us stepped up. I was really happy to see how far we moved forward. I’m thinking we’ll be able to take another step forward and do well next season, too.”
It was his best varsity season so far.
“I feel I definitely was a leader on the team and played a big part,” Haverkamp said. “I figured I played a big part too in giving other people opportunities to score too.”
A highlight of the season was a win over Maple City Glen Lake.
“We were down at halftime and chasing the whole game until the fourth quarter,” he said. “A lot of us stepped up and started playing better defense. We came back and ended up winning by 10.”
Haverkamp’s highest point game was 33 against Roscommon.
“I definitely was working to get the rebounds,” he said.
For next year, “we have quite a bit of talent coming back,” Haverkamp said. “Ben Rodenbaugh I feel will step up significantly. Some of my other teammates I feel will make a difference next year. We’ll be a good athletic team and well be hard to stop next year.”
Haverkamp played football last year and was a tight end and defensive end.
“I had some complications but am hoping to play this year,” he said.
Haverkamp plays a lot of offseason basketball.
