LAWTON – Four Lawton High School graduates will be inducted Friday, Feb. 24, into the Lawton Blue Devil Hall of Fame. The four include Buster Turner, Colonel (ret) Carol Clair, Craig Rupp, and Peggy Nicholas.
In making the announcement, the school district said of each individual, “Buster Turner has been a dedicated employee for many years having a tremendous impact on the district and community with countless examples of serving others. Buster is kind and selfless who has committed his time and efforts to support so many in the Lawton Community.”
Colonel (ret) Carol Clair was the 1977 class president, valedictorian, and was a member of each of the inaugural female athletic teams at Lawton. She was selected at the Most Outstanding Female Athlete and the first and only winner of the Vaughn Cornish Award. “Carol has a highly decorated military career serving in the United States Army. She has been awarded the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.”
Craig Rupp was the 1979 valedictorian and excelled as a member of the cross country, track and basketball teams. Craig was a longtime teacher and coach, serving Lawton High School for 38 years. “Craig committed decades of superb service to Lawton Community Schools as a student, athlete, teacher and coach.”
Peggy Nicholas was a longtime teacher at Lawton Elementary School, serving as a kindergarten teacher from 1962-1993. “As a teacher, Peggy was a kind and caring soul and was exactly what was needed for our students and families as they entered their school experience. Peggy developed the storied tradition of the Kindergarten Circus that is performed every year by our Kindergarten students. The 2023 circus will be the 60th performance and the memories that so many of our students and alumni have will forever be linked to Peggy.”
The ceremony will take place between the varsity basketball games.
