Smoke spotted coming from a room at the Acorn Motel, 1306 North Clare Avenue in Harrison, and reported just before 10 am Tuesday, engulfed the room by the time Harrison firefighters arrived on the scene, said Chief Chris Damvelt.
“The call reported smoke coming from room 1 at the motel, the room closest to the road,” the Chief said. “We were able to contain the fire to that room and its contents,” he added.
He said the room that was destroyed in the blaze was rented but unoccupied at the time of the fire, adding, “Preliminary investigation showed that it may have been caused by a wall furnace.”
No estimate of the damage has been made yet, he said.
He said no one was injured during the incident. Harrison firefighters were assisted at the scene by Clare Fire, Gladwin Fire, the Clare County Sheriff’s Office and Mobile Medical Response Ambulance Service.
Damvelt said, “The weather is getting colder.” He urged “getting a pre-season check before using furnaces or other types of heating equipment.”
Firefighters were on the scene for about two hours that morning.
