The Paw Paw Volunteer Fire Department responded to two large fires early Tuesday morning, Oct. 31. The first fire, a barn fire, was called in at approximately 2 a.m., according to Paw Paw Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jim DeGroff. Responding to the fire in the 39000 block of Paw Paw Road, the Paw Paw Fire Department was assisted by Lawton Fire Department with manpower and Decatur Fire Department with a tanker. Chief DeGroff said over 500 bales of hay stored in the barn were destroyed, as well as other feed. Several livestock in the barn were rescued, however one pig was lost, according to Chief DeGroff.
The second fire, a mobile home, in Country Holiday Estates, Waverly Township, reported soon after the initial barn fire, saw the Paw Paw Volunteer Fire Department respond to that, with assistance from Bloomingdale Fire Department and Bangor Fire Department.
