MCBAIN – McBain Northern Michigan Christian on Monday blanked Roscommon 1-0.
Gideon Curell had one goal. Dries VanNoord had one assist. Blair DeZeeuw had 14 saves in net.
“Tonight was another step in the right direction,” NMC coach Taylor Mulder said. “We worked hard and played with the highest intensity yet this year for most of the game. We got our goal halfway through the first half but continued to create chances throughout the whole game.
“As the game was winding down, Roscommon renewed its effort and put us under tremendous pressure but due to some stellar saves by Blair, some luck, and some big hustle plays by our defenders and midfielders, we were able to keep a clean sheet.”
The Comets are 3-3 and will be at Ogemaw Heights on Sept. 5 and will be home with Tawas Sept 7.
“As a team, things are really starting to come together and it gets me very excited for the rest of the season to see how far they can grow,” Mulder said.
NMCS blanked Shepherd 1-0 on Aug. 25. Blair DeZeeuw had two saves in net. Titus Johns had one goal.
“Tonight was an entertaining game to watch as a coach,” Mulder said. “We worked all week on increasing our speed of play and focusing on going to the ball quickly. Tonight we implemented that very well and it resulted in a win. The guys worked hard all game and kept the pressure up resulting in 24 shots.
Although we had 24 shots, our goal came from a penalty kick.
“The guys have proven they can generate scoring opportunities, the next step in their growth as a team and as players is to put those shots in the back of the net. I expect to see very good things after a couple of practices with that as the focus.”
