The Clare Pioneers lost their first game of the season at home against the Freeland Falcons with a final score of 29-26.
The Falcons were the first to score in the game, taking an early lead after a two-yard rushing touchdown by Sam Talaga. The Pioneers then started to come back in the second quarter when Jayden Arthur scored a three-yard rushing touchdown, making the score 9-7.
As the game went on, touchdowns continued to be scored back and forth. Arthur helped Clare secure another one in the second quarter with a completed one-yard pass. The score was then 16-14 at halftime.
The Pioneers took the lead in the third quarter with a five-yard rushing touchdown, but failed a two-point conversion, making the score 20-16. Freeland briefly took the lead back in the fourth quarter after a 30-yard fumble return touchdown. Clare then had a 40-yard pass to Carter Smedley for another touchdown, getting back in the lead with the score being 26-22.
The winning touchdown came to Freeland with under a minute left in the game. After a one-yard rushing touchdown and a PAT, the Falcons managed to win the game 29-26.
The Pioneers’ next game will be on August 31 at home against Pinconning, who lost their first game of the season against Tawas.
