ALLEGAN – Allegan County commissioner chairman James Storey has pointd out The statue of the Civil War Union Soldier has stood watch at the southeast corner of Allegan’s courthouse square since 1903.
This Wednesday, Dec. 20, the statue is scheduled to be moved to a new position at the northwest corner of the square.
Contractors for the county will move the statue along the streets surrounding the square with a scheduled starting time of 8 a.m.
“The statue’s move is required due to an expansion of the courthouse needed to accommodate the addition of a third circuit court judge on January 1, 2025,” Storey said in his monthly newsletter. “The legislature approved the additional judge position in response to the increased caseload dockets of the two current circuit judges, Margaret Zurich Bakker, and Matthew Antkoviak.”
