Robert James Taylor, 72, of Otsego, MI passed away on Saturday, January 7, 2023, surrounded by family. Rob was born on September 1, 1950 in Chambersburg, PA, to George P Taylor Jr and Caroline (Giambra) Taylor, who preceded him in death.
Rob graduated from Penn State University in 1971 with an Associate’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was a computer programmer in the aerospace industry for most of his career.
Rob obtained a Balloon Pilot’s license in 1975. He, along with his brother, Preston (also a balloon pilot), spent many years participating in hot air balloon events and competitions on the East coast. They, along with their Aunt Angie Giambra and brother-in-law, Anthony Caputo, formed The Balloon Company in 1975 and for four years seeking a corporate sponsor.
Along with ballooning, Rob’s lifelong passions included photography, boating on Lake St. Clair, MI and, in his later years, gardening. He spent many years planting flowers at numerous churches in Detroit, MI. He was a volunteer member of the Orchid Society of Belle Isle and always looked forward to sharing his love of gardening with them. He later developed an interest in Asiatic lilies and was working on a method of propagating lilies.
Rob is survived by his brother, Preston Taylor of Allegan, MI; sister, Regina Beck, Allegan; sister Cynthia (Anthony) Caputo, Hightstown, NJ; and nephew, Christopher Caputo, Hamilton, NJ.
Memorial service will be held Saturday, January 14 at 2:30pm at The River Christian Reformed Church, 1652 Lincoln Rd, Allegan. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to The River Church, or Chris McAndrew, c/o Furry Friends Pet Recovery, 3281 Renwick Ct, Zeeland, MI 49464.
Cremation will be provided by Gorden Funeral Residence.
My deepest condolences to you Regina, and also to your family.
