Customers at a gas station near Plainwell are being asked to check their credit card statements for any suspicious activity.
According to a statement from the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday, Dec. 7, a credit card skimmer was found at the Admiral gas station located at 1149 M-89 Highway.
A skimmer is a device that collects credit-card numbers, potentially allowing the individual or individuals who installed it to make fraudulent purchases.
Authorities aren’t sure how long the skimmer had been in place.
“If you’ve gotten gas (at this Admiral station) recently, please keep an eye on your credit card or bank statements for any suspicious charges,” the release from the Sheriff’s Office said.
If a customer is concerned about potentially falling victim to a card skimmer, paying inside is an option, according to officials.
