Vernon “Vern” L. Hart, age 80, formerly of Oscoda passed away Monday, October 24, 2022 at the Schnepp Senior Care Center in St. Louis. Vernon was born the son of the late Richard “Dick” and Jennie (Heizer) Hart on April 14, 1942 in Cedarville. He was a Clare High School graduate, class of 1960; following graduation he served his Country in the U.S. Navy, completing 4 tours of duty in Vietnam. Vernon rose to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer, 3rd class, in charge of Aviation Anti-submarine Warfare; retiring in 1983 after serving 23 years. He worked as a Computer Hardware Developer for 4 years before acquiring his Charter fishing company, Ginger Snaps Charters. He was a sought-after Captain of two boats, Ginger Snaps and Baby Huey, fishing out of Oscoda for over 20 years. Vernon made many friends through his love of fishing and many more through his service to other veterans. He was a charter member of the Mikado American Legion, former Post Commander at both the Mikado and Oscoda Posts and served as Chef De Gare for the 40 and 8 Society for several years. The annual fishing tournament for the disabled, hosted by the American Legion Post was one of his favorite events and he was pivotal to its 10 years of success.
Throughout his life, Vernon was a fierce protector of the weak. When his father died at a young age, he became the man of the house and took on the role of protector of his mother and eight siblings. His stellar career of service in the U.S. Navy speaks for itself. Later in life, he amassed many friends who benefited from his daily care visits.
Vernon is survived by his sons, Richard (Donna Jenkins) Hart of Midland, William (Heather) Hart of Saginaw; his grandson Mason (Abbey) Hart; a great-granddaughter, Lakelyn Hart and siblings Jan Slocum, Jean Cruikshank, Lester Hart, June Figgins, Joe Hart and Oliver Hart. He was predeceased by a grandson, Justin Hart, sister, Barbara West, brother, Leon Hart and his long-time partner Sandy Blum.
A celebration of Vernon’s life will take place at the Clare Chapel of Stephenson-Wyman Funeral Home on November 12, 2022 at 11am, Pastor Lane Van with military honors to take place at the Clare VFW immediately following.
