MARTIN—Saugatuck senior Luke Gorgas earned a place on the All-County boys cross country team thanks to his performance at the Allegan County Meet on Friday, Oct. 21.
Classmate Charlie Stormer nearly joined him.
Gorgas turned in a time of 17:56 at an uncharacteristically dry course at US-131 Motorsports Park in Martin, which was good for 14th place. Stormer was two spots behind at 16th with him time of 18:06.
All-County honors went to the top 15 finishers.
As a team, the Trailblazers finished with 116 points, which put them in fifth place. Otsego took top honors with 26 points as they had the top three individual finishers in Colin Wesseldyk (first at 16:23), Caleb Wesseldyk (second at 16:31) and Pierce Bentley (third at 16:47).
Wayland was second with 58 points, followed by Hamilton in third (65) and Plainwell in fourth (87). Allegan was sixth with 182 points and Hopkins was seventh with 192.
Freshman Brennan Nor (31st at 18:52), sophomore Justin Oetman (32nd at 18:52) and freshman Sammy Gamboa (37th at 19:18) joined Gorgas and Stormer as scoring runners.
Junior Ben Schoonmaker (75th at 22:41) and senior Luke Schoonmaker (77th at 22:57) also competed for Saugatuck.
In the girls race, Saugatuck placed sixth with 149 points. Otsego—which had the top four finishers in Megan Germain (first at 18:56), Emma Hoffman (second at 19:12), Taylor Mitchell (third at 19:41) and Logan Brazee (fourth at 19:46)—took the top spot with 17 points.
Plainwell (72 points), Hopkins (85), Wayland (96) and Hamilton (113) finished second through fifth, respectively.
Sophomore Leilani Schoonmaker paced the Trailblazers with a 19th-place showing of 22:36.
Junior Maya Veldt (32nd at 24:06), junior Anna McQueary (35th at 24:25) sophomore Meryn Curtis (46th at 26:38) and junior Kiran Gahir (62nd at 31:53) rounded out the list of Saugatuck’s runners.
