The Michigan State Police announced that the body of 31-year-old Logan Thayer Sweet of Hamilton was located on Wednesday, July 27, 2022 at 3:22pm near 134th Avenue and 32nd Street in Monterey Township between Hamilton and Dorr. The preliminary investigation shared that it appears Sweet’s bike left the road and hit a tree.
The search for Sweet began on Monday, July 25th. After attending a concert by the duo Tall Heights at the Listening Room on Ionia Avenue SW in Grand Rapids. He had been excited about the concert, and called his wife Ali at 9:55pm to inform her that he was headed home on his gray Kawasaki 650 sport bike. He did not arrive by the expected 11pm.
When he did not appear on Monday, Ali informed the police who released a Be On Lookout (BOL). The Michigan State Police asked landowners to check their property that bordered roads for signs of Sweet and his motorcycle. In addition, an MSP helicopter searched from the sky.
At 4:15pm on Monday, July 25th, Sweet’s wife posted on Facebook that Sweet was missing. The last phone ping had been near the Weston Apartments in downtown Grand Rapids, but Ali had no other connection with Sweet’s phone that appeared to be dead.
Tuesday, family and friends continued searching possible routes Sweet may have taken home. But to no avail.
Wednesday, approximately 30 groups of family, friends and strangers organized at a base camp near Dorr in Salem Township. The teams fanned out and continued exploring possible routes Sweet may have followed. A volunteer who was also a motorcyclist took a path that seemed the most likely. It was along that route that he found Sweet’s body.
The preliminary investigation indicated Sweet had veered off the road and into a wooded area where he struck a tree. The crash continues to be investigated by the Wayland Police Post to uncover additional details.
The care and perseverance shown by the volunteer search groups was expressed by the administrator of the Facebook group Help Find Logan Sweet. Liz Byers acknowledged the groups’ determination in supporting Ali and bringing the search to closure.
The Michigan State Police posted on Twitter, “Our thoughts and prayers are extended to the family and friends during this difficult time.”
Lt. Michelle Robinson with MSP stated, “The individual who came down to assist in the search effort this afternoon felt that he needed to come. As a motorcyclist, he asked, ‘Where would I ride?’ It was along that route the searcher located Sweet’s body.”
MSP added, “Thank you to the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office, MSP Aviation, Western Michigan University Medical Examiner and especially the volunteers who searched tirelessly over the past few days.”
Logan was well liked by family and friends. He had a quick smile and was described more than once as “goofy” with his sense of humor. At the same time, he had a warmth and positive attitude on life.
Members of the Tantrick Brewing “family” shared how Sweet would hang around and ask “a million questions” about projects. “We all lost a good man who was in love with life…. Please love a little more fiercely in Logan’s honor.”

A Celebration of Life for Logan Sweet will be held on August 7, 2022 from 4-8pm at Mahan Park in downtown Allegan. Organizers ask that you grab a Social District beer and bring a chair if you wish to sit.
