Police say shooting victim was under the influence

Detectives with the Michigan State Police (MSP) Fifth District Special Investigations Section (SIS) have confirmed through investigations that the deceased suspect Joseph Maverick Nagle was stopped for suspicion of impaired driving. Indicators of impairment were observed during the performance of sobriety tests. When Nagle was advised he was under arrest, he immediately began fighting the deputy.
During this altercation, the deputy fired a single gunshot that hit Nagle in the chest area. As reported earlier, the patrol vehicle was not equipped with a dashcam, and the deputy was not wearing a bodycam. As such, there is no known video/audio of this incident.
Additionally, the involved deputy’s name is not being release at this time in order to protect the integrity of this investigation. Detectives continue seeking information and evidence to ultimately turn over a professional and thorough report to the Allegan County prosecutor’s office.
