Many people are asking what they can do to support the Ukrainians and help the Ukrainian refugees fleeing their war-ravaged country.
One action is to attend the Sunflowers for Ukraine fundraiser sponsored by Brave Art Studios & Gallery and the City of Allegan on Saturday, April 30 at Griswold Auditorium from 5-9 pm.
Over 30 artists will be sharing their works with sunflowers covering a variety of media such as photography, oils, watercolors, and acrylics. Twenty percent of all sales will go to Global Relief for the Refugees of the Ukraine War with some artists donating 100% of their sales.
In addition, Dave & Connie D Music Biz, a very popular local combo, will be providing music during the evening, and a cash bar will be available. Taste Budz food truck will also be onsite selling such items as sandwiches, phillies, burgers and fries.
When Paulette and Tim Carr of Brave Art Studio & Gallery approached the City of Allegan for permission to hold the benefit, Parker Johnson, Assistant City Manager said, “it was a humanitarian effort that the city could support,” and the Council unanimously approved the request.
Sunflowers are the Ukraine’s national flower, and the country is one of the top producers in the world of sunflower-related products such as oils, seeds, flours, etc., according to Paulette.
“But I see another reason for them being our theme. The strength of the sunflower stem supports a weighty head filled with seeds for the future. It reminds me of great minds and thoughts.”
“Sunflowers also turn towards the light and away from the darkness,” Paulette, adds. “When they encounter darkness or a day without enough sun, they turn towards each other for strength and energy. How could I not choose Sunflowers for Ukraine as the theme when the whole of the nation represents all of these characteristics!”
While there is no admission fee, donations of $10 per person are suggested at the door with all monies collected going to Global Relief.
