A record-setting effort from Titus Smith in the 100-yard butterfly highlighted a runner-up finish for the Allegan boys swim & dive team at its home quad meet on Saturday, Feb. 12.
Smith posted a time of 54.23 to break the school record and qualify for the Division 3 state finals.
As a team, the Tigers finished with 208 points, while Holland won with 290 points. Kalamazoo Central (200) and South Haven (48) placed third and fourth, respectively.
Smith also won the 50 free at 22.88, while teammate Gabe Harlan won the 100 free at 51.42. Smith and Harlan joined forces with Conrad Eichbauer and Ian Hammer to claim the top spot in the 200 free relay (1:32.64) and the 400 free relay (3:26.27).
On Tuesday, Feb. 8, the Tigers faced Southwestern and Central Michigan Swim League leader Harper Creek and fell 114-57.
“We had numerous outstanding swims tonight despite the loss,” Allegan co-coach Carol Gephart said.
Smith again led the way, winning the 200 free with a school-record time of 1:49.81. Harlan won the 100 free with a time of 50.73. Both of those performances were good enough to qualify for the state finals.
