Residents mixed about Roundabout

By Leslie Ballard

After people studied the conceptual drawing for the proposed roundabout at M-89/M40/Hubbard St./Ely St, they had this to say:
“That’s a dangerous spot so I’m glad they are doing something. It takes awhile to figure them out, but I’m gradually learning as I use them in other places.” Sharon Jager
“It’s a terrible intersection, especially after the schools let out – there’s so much traffic and the buses really have trouble. Personally, I think it’s a good idea. People who haven’t used them will probably be a little scared, but we’ll figure it out.” Kara Jones
“I have no problems with a roundabout. The first time using one, it’s rough, but it’ll be all right.” Tom Hunter
“Fantastic! Anything you can do to make getting through that intersection easier, more convenient is great. At fair time it could be a problem but that’s probably the only time it would be.” Joel Tamandl
“People who don’t like change will not be happy.” Wyatt Fabijnacic
“Not a good idea – too small an area for a roundabout so it will take more time.” Gregorio Padin
“I think a roundabout will be really good for the flow of traffic. I’ve had a lot of trouble with that intersection.” Anonymous person in Sassy Olive
“I would be very much for it as that area gets very congested and the back ups are intense.” Harper, postal service employee
“I don’t think it’s a good idea. In my opinion they’re asking for problems with trucks, winter weather…” Anonymous person in Hathaway Cottage
“It’s good that it will make it safer for walkers.” Anonymous person in Aubrey’s Closet
“I hate them! They cause al lot of accidents – look at the ones in Kalamazoo. Get ready for a lot of accidents.” Local semi-truck driver
“I think it’s a good idea – it will help traffic flow better through there.” Anonymous True Value shopper
“It’s a good idea. That intersection is so bad – that whole area along M-89 is a disaster. I just hope it will have good signage so drivers know in time what lane to be in and where to turn.” Elizabeth Closson
“I’m okay with it as long as it’s planned for truck traffic. I’ve experienced the roundabouts in Marquette while visiting our daughter, and once you get used to them, they work really well.” Phil Siegler
