The Marion girls basketball team played at Mesick in a key West Michigan ‘D’ League game Monday. The Lady Eagles weren’t able to get much going during the night though, falling 39-25.
“We started slow and never really recovered in a very physical and emotional game,” head coach Matt Lagrow said. “Give all the credit to Mesick, as we did not quite match their intensity. As a team, we know we can play better than we did, but we have a lot of work to do moving forward. I know our girls will rise to the occasion.”
The Lady Eagles trailed after each quarter break, 18-6, 28-16 and 39-25.
Georgia Meyer accounted for the bulk of their offense, accounting for 12 points, nine rebounds and five steals.
On Friday Marion won a home WMD contest over Mason County Eastern, 49-29.
“This was a fight the entire way,” LaGrow said. “We put together our best quarter of the year in the second and besides that quarter, this game was even the entire way.”
The Eagles were behind 9-6 after the first quarter, but rallied to claim a 26-19 lead by the half and led 40-23 entering the fourth.
Meyer had a monster night with 20 points, 18 rebounds and three blocks, McKayla Cruson had six points and eight rebounds, Maddie Sutten added seven points and Stella Henderson and Harley Bear had six points apiece.
“We had contributions from several different players,” LaGrow said. “Henderson and Emily Krchmar did a great job defensively for us. Bear provided a nice spark of the bench for us. I was proud of the way we kept our composure throughout the game. Great team effort.”
Marion (4-2 overall, 4-1 WMD) hosts Big Rapids Crossroads today (Friday) and hosts Manistee Catholic Central on Monday.
