The LaFayette Bulldogs hosted a post season sub-regional playoff game last Saturday against the Fyffe Red Devils at the Dog Palace in LaFayette.
LaFayette advanced to the sub regionals after defeating county rival Lanett 51-38 in the Class 2A Area 6 finals last Tuesday night.
The Fyffe Red-Devils came in as a formidable opponent for the Bulldogs. Although Fyffe is known for being a powerhouse in football, Fyffe has been considered as one of the more competitive teams in recent years in Class 2A basketball.
LaFayette didn’t take the Red Devils for granted and were ready for war as soon as they came out of the locker room. The Bulldogs wasted little to no time to let the Red Devils know whose house they were in.
The Dogs jumped out to an early lead and never relinquished it. It was the man to man defense and the half court pressure that was the key to the Bulldogs victory.
The pressure forced the Red Devils into costly turnovers and taking bad shots, which generated more offensive opportunities for the Dogs.
LaFayette capitalized on the Red Devils mishaps and closed the first half with a commanding 38-15 advantage.
In the third quarter, the Red Devils came out on a quick 5-0 run to close the Bulldogs gap to 38–20.
This would be the closest the Red Devils would get in the second half and LaFayette would close the door on any hopes Fyffe had of making a comeback.
LaFayette played arguably their most complete game of the season. They were very consistent in all aspects of the game on both offense and defense.
The Bulldogs were led in scoring by freshman Jayden Thompson with 17 points. Junior, Jordan Johnson followed closely behind with 16 points. Branaviyun Story also had 12 points. The Bulldogs will now travel to Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, AL to face off with Section in the Class 2A Northeast Regional Semifinals on Friday night at 7:30 CST.
