Mattawan volleyball team wins district title

MATTAWAN – Last week Mattawan defeated West Ottawa in the semi finals and Zeeland East in the finals to capture a district Division I volleyball title. Mattawan was set to play this week in Division 1 regional action against Byron Center at Caledonia.
Against West Ottawa, Kendall Coon had 18 kills; Macey Brown four aces and 27 digs; Kylie Anderson had 39 assists
and Larkin Baima four blocks.
Against Zeeland East, Kendall Coon had 12 kills; Macey Brown six digs and five aces and Kylie Anderson 20 assists.
Mattawan is 12-9-1.
Lawton football
Lawton’s football season ended with a 9-2 record following a 27-24 loss at North Muskegon on Friday in the Division 3 championship game. North Muskegon is 11-0.
North Muskegon fired out to a 7-0 lead before Aiden O’Brien had a 69-yard touchdown run (followed by Logan Nap’s PAT). Landon Christensen’s 57-yard pass put North Muskegon up 13-7. Caleb Mallory came back with a 1-yard run and Nap’s PAT put his team up 14-13. Kal Motter’s 15-yard run made it at 21-13 at halftime.
Nap kicked a 37-yard field goal for Lawton which led 24-13 in the third.
But North Muskegon scored two touchdowns and an extra point to seal the win. O’Brien had 136 yards rushing while Mallory had 67 yards. O’Brien passed for 64 yards.
Mallory led the Lawton defense with eight tackles.
