Mattawan volleyball team wins league title

MATTAWAN – Mattawan’s volleyball team defeated Portage Central in three sets (25-15, 25-15, 25-17) last week to capture the SMAC West Championship title. Stat leaders were:
Aces: Macey Brown (3); Kills: Kendall Coon (9); Blocks: Amelia Kuiper (2); Assists: Kylie Anderson (25); Digs: Anya Cieieslski (7)
Mattawan also won the Lakewood Invitational this weekend:
Mattawan lost 2-0 to Caledonia, beat Plainwell 2-0, topped Hamilton 2-1, defeated Marshall 2-1 and blanked Caledonia 2-0.
For stats, Addison Steward had 10 aces, Amelia Kuiper 41 kills, Larkin Baima 18 blocks, Kylie Anderson 136 assists and Anya Cieielski 60 digs.

Mattawan at Portage
MATTAWAN – Mattawan finished 35th among 36 boys teams in Division 1 of the Portage Invitational on Saturday.
Owen Fisher was 105th (16:57.8), Marcel Stork was 180th (17:40.9),
226th (18:37.6), Tanner Christensen was 242nd (19:13.1), Richard George was 244th (19:23.2) and Jackson Stewart 246th (19:26.5).
Mattawan was 32nd in the girls Division 1 race.
Kali Bunce was 162nd (21:45.1) for Mattawan, Natalie Barron 172nd (21:54.2), Addison Bell 173rd (21:55.6), Sophie Roberts 180th (22:10.00) and Ava Vergara was 183rd (22:20.2).
Mattawan boys were fourth of five league teams on Oct. 4 in a SMAC jamboree. Jaxon Bunce was 23rd (19:05.0).
For the girls, who were fifth, Kali Bunce was 11th (21:36.71).
