South Haven’s Salute to Veterans Weekend pays tribute to heroes

South Haven, 18-19 August 2023 – South Haven is gearing up for a weekend of heartfelt gratitude and patriotism as it prepares to host the annual Salute to Veterans Weekend on August 18th and 19th. With a range of meaningful activities, the weekend promises to be a moving tribute to the brave men and women who have served our nation, culminating in a spectacular boat parade and fly-over.
Saturday, August 19th: A Day to Remember
On Saturday, August 19th, South Haven will come alive with activities that honor veterans’ contributions and sacrifices:
Veteran Fishing Trip – 5:00 AM: The day begins at dawn with a poignant Veteran Fishing Trip. Veterans will embark on a serene fishing excursion, reflecting on their service and camaraderie while casting lines into the tranquil waters. It’s a meaningful opportunity to create lasting memories and strengthen bonds.
Boat Parade & Fly-over – 12:00 PM: At noon, all eyes will turn to the Black River as the Boat Parade & Fly-over takes center stage. The waterway will be adorned with a dazzling display of boats. Bring your flags and cameras ready to capture the momentous occasion. A majestic fly-over by the Hooligan’s flight team will grace the skies, serving as a powerful salute to veterans past and present.
Distinguished Parade Marshal: LTC (Retired) David Krzycki
Leading the Boat Parade as the Parade Marshal is Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) David Krzycki, a distinguished veteran and the Director of Van Buren Counties Veteran Services. LTC Krzycki’s commitment to veterans’ well-being and his exceptional leadership make him the perfect choice to lead this symbolic procession.
Honoring Vietnam Veterans: Jim McCloughan and Company C (Charlie Tigers)
The Salute to Veterans Weekend also commemorates the bravery of four Army veterans – Jim McCloughan and his three battle buddies from Company C (Charlie Tigers), 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry, 196th Light Infantry Brigade, Americal Division. These courageous individuals fought side by side in one of the fiercest battles during the Vietnam War from May 13-15, 1969. Their unwavering camaraderie and mutual support saved lives and continue to inspire generations.
Salute To Veterans Weekend Details
Leading up to the grand Boat Parade, the South Haven American Legion will host a dinner on Friday, August 18th from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, where the community can break bread with veterans and express their gratitude. Admission is only $9.00 per person, providing an opportunity to connect and pay homage to those who served.
Community Support and Participation
The Salute to Veterans Weekend is made possible through the support of organizations like the Sons of the American Legion and the South Haven Steelheaders. Over 75 soldiers, sailors, Airmen, and Marines will take part in the parade and fishing event, backed by the support of Operation Injured Soldier and Battle Creek VA Hospital Veterans.
