On June 10, 2023, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (EST), Mitchell Springs United Methodist Church and Mitchell Springs Rosenwald School will be unveiling a historical marker on the grounds of Mitchell Springs United Methodist Church, 1019 County Road #533, Lanett, AL.
To highlight this celebration, there will be a program led by Moderator, Reverend Cecelia Broome, Pastor of Pine Grove United Methodist Church, Lafayette, AL, and St. Paul United Methodist Church, Five Points.
The keynote speaker, is Mr. George Barrow, Chairman of the New Hope Foundation, Fredonia, AL. The New Hope Foundation, Inc., is a non-profit organization dedicated to the restoration and preservation of the historic New Hope Rosenwald School.
Mr. Barrow was instrumental in getting a historical marker for the New Hope Rosenwald School located in Fredonia, AL. He brings to the program a wealth of knowledge about the many Rosenwald Schools that were established throughout the South by a partnership between Booker T. Washington, founder of Tuskegee Institute, and Mr. Julius Rosenwald, a wealthy Jewish philanthropist and the president of Sears and Roebuck Company. The partnership was established to build schools for African Americans so they will have a place to attend school to get an education for the betterment of their lives and the community in which they live.
After unveiling the marker, please join the church members and the alumni for refreshments and conversation about this historical marker. What a milestone in African American history, “Lift Every Voice And Sing.” The Church and the Alumni Association have established a scholarship program that awards one senior from each of the high schools in Chambers County.
