Lulu Marie Hammer, 75 of Allegan, passed away Tuesday, May 16, 2023 at the Allegan County Medical Care Community. Born January 16, 1948 in Allegan, Michigan, she was the daughter of the late James and Lulu (Borst) Phelps and the wife of the late Richard Larry Hammer. Marie, as most people knew her by, was a caring and loving daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother. Being a breast cancer survivor, she knew how important it was to be there for others and she proved it by providing her hair to Locks of Love. She also helped with the food drives at a local church, always spreading cheer and goodwill. During her working years, she was at Querbach Cleaning and Leather Processing prior to spending 25 years at Life Savers. In her spare time, Marie enjoyed going to concerts, especially her favorite performers – Toby Keith, Garth Brooks and Charlie Daniels. She was also a bird watcher who liked just relaxing and watching the birds in their natural habitats. Though she wasn’t much into cooking, Marie did like to make desserts. Some of her “famous” ones were peanut butter fudge and pistachio fluff (her “elephant snot”). Nurturing and providing her family with love and comfort was always top on Marie’s list. Her beautiful spirit is truly missed.
Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Michael (Tina) Hammer and their children, Aubrie and Alyssa Hammer; her daughter, Heather Thomson and her children, Caitlynn Thomson and Brayla Boulter; two siblings, Jim Phelps and Myrtle (Mark) Bloomfield; and her sister-in-law, Chris Gomber.
Along with her husband of 55 years, Richard; and her parents, Marie was preceded in death by her brother, Reho Gomber; son-in-law, Matt Thomson; and her grandson, Josh Thomson.
Memorial donations may be made in Marie’s name to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation (https://www.komen.org) 13770 Noel Road, Suite 801889, Dallas, TX 75380 or Locks of Love (https://locksoflove.org/get-involved/) 234 Southern Blvd., West Palm Beach, FL 33405-2701.
A Memorial Service will be held on June 3, 2023 at 1:00 PM at the Open Door Worship Center located at 2449 54th St., Fennville, MI 49408, with refreshments to follow. The family wishes to thank the staff at Allegan County Medical Care Community for their care over the last few months.
