Paw Paw baseball hosted Plainwell
The Paw Paw baseball team played at home against Plainwell on Thursday. The Red Wolves struggled in game one, falling 13-3. Game two they were able to salvage a 7-7 tie, in a game that was called off after five innings due to darkness.
In game one, the Red Wolves committed eight errors on defense. Micah Major pitched one inning in relief and struck out three batters.
The offense saw Jacob Major get an RBI single, with Landon Buhl and Joe Miller getting one hit and one steal each.
“Matthew Hartman did a nice job behind the dish due to Jacob breaking his finger earlier in the game,” head coach Derek Vanderburg said.
In game two, Paw Paw was behind 7-6 entering the last inning. Remi Hahn pinch hit with two outs, roping an RBI double to tie the game up 7-7.
On offense Jake Hindenach had a triple, a single and two RBI, Gunnar Goodell had two hits and one RBI, Nick Boyd had two hits and Buhl hit a double. Miller and Ian Bradley both had one hit and one RBI and Hartman added a single.
Mattawan baseball picks up pair of Saturday wins
The Mattawan baseball team traveled to Grandville on Saturday, where they took on host Grandville and Grand Rapids Christian.
In the first game against Grandville, Mattawan claimed a 7-5 win.
Brendan Schultz started the game pitching, giving up two earned runs on five hits while striking out three batters. Josh DeJong pitched the final two innings, earning the win.
On offense, Connor Walsh, Jaxon Engels and Colin O’Reilly were able to get two hits apiece.
The second game was a 14-5 win over Grand Rapids Christian.
Kaden Jominy got the win on the mound, going five innings and striking out nine. Josh Dejong and Myles Tomlinson each tossed an inning in relief.
Brendan Garza led the offense with three hits and four RBI.
On Thursday Mattawan played at Gull Lake, where they played to a split. They lost game one 2-1 but came back to win game two 8-5.
In the opener, Brendan Garza took the loss despite pitching well, he gave up two runs on three hits and struck out eight.
Drew Atkinson had the team’s lone offensive highlight, hitting a solo home run to lead off the contest.
In game two, Connor Walsh and Cole Garza each had two hits.
Lawton girls soccer plays to tie with Parchment
The Lawton girls soccer team played at Parchment on Thursday. In a rather even contest, the two teams came away with a 2-2 tie.
Freshman Taylor Whipple had both goals for the team and Madi Packer was able to make five saves in goal.
“Tough fought battle,” head coach Abigail Burris said. “We came from behind in the second half. We’re dealing with lots of injuries right now so most of the girls are playing the entire game and fighting with their whole heart the whole game.”
