LAWRENCE TWP. – A 57-year-old Kalamazoo riding a motorcycle Friday afternoon, April 7, on Red Arrow Highway, Lawrence Township, was struck by a pickup truck pulling a trailer that was turning into a private drive. The cyclist later died at a Kalamazoo hospital from injuries he received, according to a press release from the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office.
Van Buren County Sheriff Daniel Abbott said that Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched at approximately 4 p.m. to the 56000 block of Red Arrow Highway, Lawrence Township, for a report of a personal injury traffic crash. Sheriff Abbott said the investigation determined that a 57-year-old Kalamazoo man was riding a motorcycle westbound on Red Arrow Highway and a 46-year-old Covert man was driving a truck pulling a trailer eastbound on Red Arrow Highway. The truck attempted to make a left-hand turn into a private driveway and struck the oncoming motorcycle.
Sheriff Abbott said the driver of the motorcycle was ejected from the motorcycle and sustained life-threatening injuries. He was transported to Bronson Methodist Hospital, Kalamazoo, where he later died from his injuries. The preliminary investigation indicates that speed was not a factor in the crash.
Names are being withheld pending the completion of the investigation.
