Lady Rebel Softball
Chambers started off the week by taking three area losses to Abbeville, but bounced back by sweeping Springwood in a double header at home on senior night honoring Carly Forbus, the only member of the Class of 2023 on the softball team. Springwood scored first on a high fly ball to center field with two runners on in the top of the first, but the Lady Rebels answered in the bottom of the inning. As the lead off, Forbus doubled on a fly ball to left field and was later knocked in by Sophie Price to tie up the score. After McKenzie Gilliland stole home on a wild pitch, Makayla Foster doubled, sending in a run to put Chambers up 3-1.
Springwood added another run in the third, but a magnificent performance by Brynlee Alford on the mound kept the Wildcats at bay and captured the 3-2 win for Chambers. Alford recorded 8 strikes and 1 walk in the win.
In the second game, the Lady Rebels had to come from behind to get the win. After an Alford two-run homer put Chambers up 4-1 in the bottom of the third, Springwood took a 4-6 lead in the top of the fifth. The Lady Rebels were able to tie up the score in the bottom of fifth on back-to-back Springwood errors. Foster then tripled on a hard hit line drive to right field. Alford hit a sacrifice fly with no outs to send in Foster and take the 7-6 win.
Foster grabbed the win on the mound, striking out six batters.
Rebel Baseball
Chambers Baseball went one and two last week against area opponent Abbeville Christian. Trailing by 3 in the first game, the Rebels were able to capitalize off a tired pitcher in the bottom of the fourth and tie up the game at 3 all. Even with a new pitcher, a wilder fifth inning ensued. Eli Pritchard and Luke Tarver recorded singles while three other batters were walked and one was hit by a pitch allowing the Rebels to score. In addition, two instances of catcher’s interference and a pitcher’s balk gave Chambers an 8-5 lead. Abbeville added a homerun in the seventh, but the Rebels got the win 8-7.
The next night, Chambers traveled to Abbeville for a double header. After holding a 9-5 lead to end the fifth, the Rebels gave up 11 runs in the sixth as the Generals’ bats came alive, and Chambers dropped the first game 10-16.
In the second game, Chambers had a near perfect first inning. With bases loaded, Buster Coker hit an RBI single. Braxton Yerta followed with a two-run double. Then, Grey Hayley smashed a three-run homer on a high fly ball to center field to put Chambers up 6-0.
The Rebels held this lead until the bottom of the fourth when Abbeville jumped out 6-8. Chambers battled back in the sixth with big hits by AJ Barnes and Yerta to make the score 8-9. Abbeville added 5 more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Hayley knocked out another homer in the top of the seventh, but the rally fell short, and the Rebels lost 9-14.
