LaFayette Bulldogs hosted the 2A Area 6 region tournament last Tuesday and Thursday.
The Bulldogs opened the tournament on Tuesday against the Reeltown Rebels, with the winner advancing to the championship game.
A win from this game would secure the Bulldogs another game in the sub region. The Bulldogs understood the assignment. Get the first win and if you happen to lose the next game you still advance to the sub region round.
In Tuesday night’s game it was all Bulldogs from start to finish. LaFayette was just too much for the visiting Rebels on this night. The Rebels never led in the game and the Dogs controlled the game from the tip-off. One of the most exciting plays of the night was a thundering base line dunk from Bulldogs Brenavian Story in the fourth quarter. The Dogs powered past the Rebels 69-44.
The win placed the Bulldogs in the Area 6 finals against rival Lanett who defeated Horseshoe Bend.
On Thursday night the Bulldogs tangled with the Lanett Panthers for the third time this season with both teams winning a game each. But this game was a little different from the others, it was for the 2A Area 6 region championship. The winner of this game would have a home game in the next round of the post season.
LaFayette started strong and stayed on top of the Panthers for the first half. The Bulldogs led by as much as 8- points in the half leading the Panthers 35-30 at the halfway mark.
The third quarter was a back and forth quarter for both teams neither could seem to grab a significant advantage.
In the fourth quarter the Panthers closed the Bulldogs lead and managed to take a lead of their own. Both teams jockeyed for supremacy with no one able to gain control of the game.
Late in the fourth quarter Lanett capitalized on a few LaFayette turnovers and never looked back.
The Panthers defeated the Bulldogs in a close one, 57-51. LaFayette traveled to Jacksonville, Alabama to play Pleasant Valley on Tuesday, February 14.
With a win on Tuesday the Dogs will play in the first round of the Alabama 2A State Sub-Regional Tournament at Jacksonville State University.
