A call from a concerned citizen resulted in representatives from the Michigan State Police Bomb Squad collecting a device from downtown Plainwell on Friday, Feb. 3.
Members of the bomb squad ultimately determined the device appeared to be safe and that the public was never in any danger, but it was taken for further analysis as a precaution.
Officers from the Plainwell Department of Public Safety became aware of the device at approximately 12:30 p.m. after being contacted by the concerned citizen.
Upon arriving at the scene at a business in downtown Plainwell, officers found what appeared to be “a very old incendiary device,” according to Plainwell Public Safety director Kevin Callahan.
The device had been hallowed out, but it was unclear if the primer was still in the device.
Photos of the device were sent to the state police bomb squad. Members of the bomb squad determined that although there did not seem to be a high danger, the device should be left where it was until they could respond and inspect it.
