HARTFORD—The winning ways continued for the Saugatuck boys basketball team when they traveled to Hartford for a non-conference clash on Tuesday, Jan. 24.
The Trailblazers built a nine-point halftime lead and extended that in the second half en route to upending Hartford 46-30 for their fourth straight victory.
Saugatuck improved to 8-3 overall.
Sophomore Carter Miller and junior Russell VandePoel provided a potent one-two offensive punch for Saugatuck. The duo combined for 33 points, with Miller going for 17 and VandePoel finishing with 16.
“Those two were able to get shots inside and outside,” Saugatuck coach Brian Ward said. “They created the majority of our offensive output.”
While Miller and VandePoel led the offensive charge, the Trailblazers used a team effort on the defensive end of the court.
Saugatuck limited the Huskies to 10 points in the first half and went to the intermission leading 19-10.
“We played a fantastic defensive first half,” Ward said. “Unfortunately, poor shooting and some missed lay-ups meant we only scored 19.”
The Trailblazers managed to increase its lead slightly to 11 points after three quarters, before using a five-point edge in the fourth quarter to close out the win.
Saugatuck was scheduled to play Gobles on Friday, Jan. 27, but the game was postponed due to the weather.
